Kick Monday’s Ass: snow – pretty to look at, sucks to drive in (Feb 7, 2022)

It’s time to Kick Monday’s Ass…

I knew it snowed in Santa Fe… I just didn’t know it snowed THIS much.

That’s not a complaint, by the way. Especially since I finally understand that whole thing about “it’s a dry cold”. I’ve actually acclimated pretty quickly to snow and ice, all things considered.

Generally speaking, Texans don’t do well in snow. But I’m loving it so far (aside from driving in it – more on that in a bit).

It’s also given me a reason to purge my clothes, which were not really cold weather friendly. I’ve started updating my wardrobe from “PJs all day every day” to my new aspirational style goal: Stevie Nicks meets Disney Villain.

That’s all happening just in time for moving week, which means I’ve already started the process of purging and packing. Somehow, everywhere I stop I wind up accumulating stuff that I eventually need to get rid of. This time I’m getting rid of approximately 50 pounds of clothes.

You think you need it all, and then you have to load and unload the boxes by yourself in the snow. That has a way of lightening the load REAL fucking quick.

And yes, I am absolutely putting my butt on the four corners this weekend.

Moving on…

Last week on the podcast…

As a director for film, television, and theatre, my guest, Tricia Brouk, knows what it takes to play the part. That’s why it might surprise you to learn that in her role as an entrepreneur, she is committed fully to being her authentic self 100% of the time. If you’ve been feeling the pressure to be someone else, listen to find out why being you is exactly what your business (and the world) needs.

After a friend asked Tricia to direct their TED talk, she realized there was an entire world of people who needed help finding their voice. Whether you’re running your business or stepping up to the speaker’s podium, this episode is full of motivation to help you share your story with the world… no permission needed. Listen now.

Section 42: Life, The Universe, and Everything…

Bill Murray would be proud…

I had my very own version of Groundhog Day (on the actual day!!) last week. First there was a winter storm warning with up to 12 inches of snow predicted… then my laptop died. I mean DIED died.

That turned into a day-long epic adventure where I had to journey out into the snowstorm several times. You can get the full story (and learn about my Best Buy knights in shining Geek Squad car) here.

I think in years past the whole experienced would have left me upset, angry, and beyond stressed. But by the end of my incredibly long day, I was laughing. Sometimes that’s all you can do.

Marketing Minute…

My Best Buy experience reminded me of something it’s easy to forget in building a business…

Marketing doesn’t stop the moment a person makes a purchase.

Everything that happens after (including when shit goes sideways) is a marketing opportunity and serves to remind folks why buying from you was the smart choice.

It’s also where a lot of business owners drop the ball – they focus so much time and effort (and money) on front-end acquisition that they forget about people who have already bought.

There’s a reason I buy all my computers from Best Buy though (and have for the last 12+ years) – on the rare occasion that I have a problem with a machine I’ve bought, I can count on them to take care of me.

Over a decade of patronage, and still… I haven’t had a bad experience in ANY of their stores when it comes to fixing something I bought from them.

Granted, when I’m in shopping mode, I never know if I’m going to get the “avoid eye contact and pretend I don’t see you” salesperson experience or the “5 people asked how they could help me in the span of two minutes and it’s overwhelming” experience.

But at Geek Squad, they take GOOD care of me. This week they even considered my personal circumstances over rigidly adhering to their warranty/return policy and telling me I was shit outta luck.

In return, I went out of my way to leave a 5-star review and tell everyone I know about how they saved my bacon in a snowstorm.

I’m willing to bet all the front-end acquisition in the world can’t match the business they just got from one strong, detailed endorsement.

So yes, don’t be afraid to advertise your business and attract new people.

But take care of your customers, because they’ll take care of you.

On repeat this week…

In honor of my new Stevie Nicks meets Disney Villain wardrobe, this week’s song is Fancy by Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX.

Rock on,
Angie

Cup of Ace, cup of Goose, cup of Cris
High heels, somethin’ worth a half a ticket on my wrist (on my wrist)
Takin’ all the liquor straight, never chase that (never)
Rooftop like we bringin’ ’88 back (what?)
Bring the hooks in, where the bass at?
Champagne spillin’, you should taste that

I’m so fancy
You already know
I’m in the fast lane
From L.A. to Tokyo

Can’t you taste this gold?
Remember my name, ’bout to blow-oh-oh-oh
