Kick Monday’s Ass: business work vs busy work (December 7, 2020)

It’s time to kick Monday’s ass…

We’re heading into the last two real productive weeks of the year… though let’s face it, a lot of folks check out right after Thanksgiving and don’t fully check in until after the New Year starts.

But now is the time to really dig deep and figure out what you want from your life and business. Don’t put it off or make it into a “new year, new me” resolution that peters out after a few weeks.

The time is now. Today is your day. Set a timer for half an hour and write about what you want – and don’t censor yourself or judge it as unbelievable. Allow yourself to dream, and to dream big – the kind of dream that you’d pursue if you knew there was a magic wand to wave that could make it a reality.

I’m especially passionate about this around this time of year – it’s almost exactly four years ago (next week!) that I walked away from the day job to start my own freelance business. Every day, I’m so grateful I worked up the courage to make that decision, even though it was really hard at the time.

And even though it hasn’t been smooth sailing the entire time, every bit of struggle was worth it, looking back.

That brings us to this week’s video…

Kick Monday’s Ass: business work vs busy work

Here’s one you may not have considered… is what you’re doing MAKING you money, or COSTING you money? I’ve seen some of my clients lose months’ worth of potential revenue doing this. They really, truly felt like they couldn’t go out and get business until they had built a website… and then it took them months (or even years) to get that website built.

In my case, I took a year to build my first website – and I was so embarrassed by that homemade monstrosity that I never actually sent people to it. And that was my lightbulb moment… I spent all my time waiting to prospect until I did this thing. And then when I did the thing, it didn’t actually have as big an impact on my business as I thought. So if you find yourself in a similar boat to early-stage Angie, here’s how you can stop stalling and get shit done…

Badass of the Week

This week I salute Guy Stanley Philoche, a painter from New York.

Art is often something we buy when we’re feeling comfortable, not something we really think much about when we’re struggling to make ends meet. And that means that in the midst of this pandemic, lots of artists have lost most (if not all) of their income from creating stuff.

Enter Guy, who sought out artists who were struggling and made it a point to buy some of their work to help them weather the storm.

Talk about stepping up to support your community. That’s something I’ve always believed – that we survive and thrive together. Well done, Guy. And to everyone still struggling… hang in there. We’re gonna make it through this.

(If you know someone who should be featured as my Badass of the Week, leave a comment and tell me!)

On Repeat This Week…

I never thought I’d find a version I liked as much as Nina Simone’s (other than Bette Midler’s version from Hocus Pocus) – but honestly as soon as I heard this, I was hooked. I had no idea it was Annie Lennox until I asked my phone to tell me more. So. Much. Soul. Love it.

I put a spell on you
Because you’re mine
You better stop the things you do
I tell ya I ain’t lyin’
I ain’t lyin’
