NOLA day trip to Oak Alley plantation

It was kinda surreal seeing it in person. I have such mixed feelings.

This is the Oak Alley plantation. My family was intermarried/allied with the family that built this sugar plantation.

I believe it’s been used as a filming location for several movies, including Interview with the Vampire.
Sadly the human cost of this place has gone largely unaccounted for until recently. The tour guide tells me the slavery exhibit is less than five years old 😳

It was built and maintained by enslaved labor. That’s part of why I struggled with the decision to visit, given my ancestral ties to this place. But it’s important to acknowledge and hold space for the horrible parts of history, just as much as recognizing beauty and progress and innovation.
