KMA: recalibrating your brain

It’s time to kick Monday’s ass…

Waffles are a straight-up miracle, yo.

(If you hate waffles, what is wrong with you?)

I had a waffle last week that changed my life, no joke. I was gonna post a picture for you but my email service provider is being a bit of a butt right now. Suffice it to say… this waffle could start wars.

What made this waffle so miraculous, you ask?
Aside from the fact that it’s a homemade lemon poppyseed waffle (x2!!!) topped with blueberries and powdered sugar that was brought to me on a tray?

I ate it on VACATION.

Like most of the world, I haven’t gone anywhere in recent memory… but one of my goals for 2020 was to start a “vacation fund” and to make trips and time offline more of a priority in my life.

This is on the heels of YEARS of hustling, grinding, and otherwise burning the candle at both ends. I knew in order to take that vacation I’ve been dreaming about, I had to put it in the calendar and make a plan.

Hard to do (and borderline irresponsible) when everyone’s hiding from the ‘rona.

So what’s a girl to do when she’s got a promise she’s made to herself, borderline burnout, and a vacation fund just begging to be spent?

She takes herself to a local mom-and-pop-owned bed and breakfast for a pseudo-vacay.

I read books. I watched hours of television. I sat on the beach and watched the sun rise (while maintaining distance from all the other whackadoos who insisted on being outside in the heat of a Texas summer).

I napped when I felt like it. I did yoga next to my bed. I ordered ALLLLLLL the takeout.

And here I am, rested, refreshed, and ready to take on the world.

Don’t feel guilty for taking care of you. You HAVE to take care of you. I once heard Joe Polish (an entrepreneur and leader I super admire) say, “you are the racehorse – how do you take care of that asset?”

That’s actually the thing that sparked my whole need to save and make taking time off a priority for my own well-being.

So that’s my challenge to you this week – even if you can’t REALLY vacation, how can you unplug and get away and recharge your batteries?

It’s not silly. It’s necessary to protect your biggest asset – YOU.

That brings us to this week’s video…

Kick Monday’s Ass: learning to think in a different way

There’s a common entrepreneurial trap that a lot of the gurus don’t really talk about… and it happens when you apply your old way of thinking to a new path.

I know for me, for probably the better part of two years, I had trouble with this. In retrospect, I can see it’s because I was filtering business owner decisions through an employee mindset… simply because being an employee was all I’d ever known.

Watch this week’s video and learn to spot it before you get caught…

Badass of the Week

This goes to all the folks working hard to improve themselves with the added downtime that we were unexpectedly given with COVID-19.

That’s not to say that everyone got that time off (hat tip to the essential workers keeping the wheels turning), or that if you DIDN’T use that time to improve yourself you’re a shitty person.

But I really believe there’s no better opportunity than today. Don’t wait for UNTIL to happen to start living your life.

Don’t wait UNTIL Monday.

Don’t wait UNTIL you lose those 10 extra pounds.

Take every opportunity you’re given to make incremental improvements… and you might just be astonished what you can achieve.

Maybe take some inspiration from this record number of folks who quit smoking while on lockdown.

(If you know someone who should be featured as my Badass of the Week, hit reply and tell me!)

On Repeat This Week…

I’m feeling very mellow… and when that mood comes on you’ll usually find me buried in R&B classics.

If you haven’t heard this one, it’s one of my go-tos when I’m feeling mellow-but-feisty.

I hope Miss Badu inspires you to cut loose anyone and anything that’s no longer serving you… and to do it with style and attitude.

That’s it for now – catch you next week. Now let’s go kick some ass…

Rock on,
Angie

PLUS: Whenever you’re ready… here are 4 ways I can help:

1) Struggling to get started with your business? Feeling overwhelmed by all the options?

I’ve got something special for you… this week my friend Ashlee is hosting a virtual workshop, Escape the Hamster Wheel, on Friday, August 21.

I’ve been working with Ashlee for more than 2 years at this point, and I credit her and her team at A Squared Online with helping me get organized and cut through all the noise to get laser focused on the stuff only I can do… and outsourcing everything else.

Now she’s hosting a one-day live workshop to help you pinpoint the ONE thing your business needs to move forward and make a clear plan for addressing it.

Normally she charges $249 for this workshop, but if you register through this link you can get in for just $199. And Ashlee told me she’s got a special gift for the first five people to register… a free copy of the Fix This Next book by Mike Michalowicz. If you want clear next steps, I can’t recommend Ashlee highly enough.

2) Need more Angie rants in your life? Sprinkle some snark on that S*&$ by following me on FacebookInstagram, and YouTube.

3) Want to get better at writing? I got together with 16 other badass industry-leading writers to talk about Writer’s Block, and how we collectively kick its ass. If you want to get good in a hurry, you’ve gotta get comfortable with churning out a ton of crap first. This guide shows you how.

4) Feeling blocked or stuck? Let’s get on the phone for 20 minutes, just you and me. We’ll solve some problems, toss out any head trash, and kick all kinds of ass. Book yours here today.

Real Talk: If you click a link in this email and choose to buy, I may get a tiny slice of the pie. I make these recommendations because 1) pie is delicious, especially when the pie is figurative and made of cash, 2) I have personally used or listened to or read everything I recommend in this email and know what it could do for you, and 3) I love imagining all the action takers out there devouring these kickass materials and progressing by leaps and bounds. Brings back happy memories of my own journey!
